Sorry this gist is coming now, i needed to get some pictures for it.
On the 25th of december, 2011, marked a memorable day for the people of Ogwashi - Uku, Delta State.
Ogwashi-Ukwu carnival is the first indigenous community carnival in Delta State, Nigeria. Its a carnival initiated to promote, not just the cultural heritage of the people of Ogwashi-ukwu kingdom but to sustain the cultural legacy that has existed among our people through dancing as well as to revive the spirit of unity among the indigenes, of this physically large community to both Nigeria and the world at large.
Ogwashi - ukwu carnival, which started a year ago, encouraged the need to use the carnival as a tool for togetherness in the kingdom. The carnival afford many of them the opportunity to joyfully come back home in December to visit, and enjoy christmas with their aged parents, old school mates and peer mates as well as mingle with new people while celebrating the dance carnival. This exciting event features some of the best cultural dances Ogwashi-ukwu has to offer, especially the appearance and display of the olobo masquerade which has become famous among the people of Anioma in Delta State, also dances like the egwu aja, egwu ikolo, egwu ozo, egwu agana, egwu seriki, with different attires, costumes, displaying beautiful cultural value. Am indeed proud to be from Ogwashi.
Even though it was sunny, with lots of people everywhere, game shows, cultural dances, raffle draws, rally, i tried to take some pictures of the event. Some people where looking like butterflies, peacocks, KIngs, Queens, due to their different costumes. This was an opportunity for those that have not visited home in long while like me *wink* , to hang out with cousins, families, friends... It was indeed fun.
We have prominent people from this great place like, the popular footballer, Austin Jay jay Okocha, Professor Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, professor Chukwuemeka Okonjo, her father, who is the the King (Igwe) of Ogwashi - ukwu kingdom.
I hope you guys don't miss out this year, 2012.
